What Do They Do?

They capture the infiltrates in motor oil -- those that build up while the oil lubricates engine parts, and those that are left over from the oil's production process. If your Kia car or SUV didn't have one, its oil pump would become stressed, its bearings would wear out, and other engine problems would invariably follow.

What are the Parts of One?

The filter medium itself, a housing (found in the engine bay, often right next to the engine cover), and a gasket. The housing holds the medium and connects it to the engine. The housing gasket is a rubber attachment, a mainstay on external and internal filters alike, that helps seal the filter, keeping motor oil from spilling out of it. The entire assembly is accessible most of the time, upon removing an undertray, from underneath the compartment. Some Kia models, however, have a filter that you can access from above the bay. Check your owner's manual for the exact location of the one in your vehicle, plus more info on it.

When Do You Change One?

Regularly, during every oil change or every other one. That's about every 3,000 miles or every 3 months. Otherwise, certain symptoms will tell you when it's going bad.

What are the Signs of a Failing One?

• An engine oil warning light may illuminate on the dashboard.
• Your vehicle may experience a loss of oil pressure.
• Your vehicle's engine may begin to consistently underperform.

If you see any of them, inspect the oil filter and swap it out for a new one if needed. When buying one, though, be sure it's the genuine article.
