Spark Plugs
Kia Spark Plugs FAQ
What Do They Do?
They initiate the combustion process inside the engines of Kia models (a process by which fuel and oxygen burns to produce power). That process, called "spark ignition," begins when a vehicle's key turns in the ignition lock cylinder (or, in newer cars and SUVs, when push-button start is pressed).
How Does Spark Ignition Work?
First, the ignition switch trips. Then, other ignition parts like the battery, starter motor, starter solenoid, and ignition coil help produce electricity, conducting it to the plugs' leads. The air and gas in the engine, having been pulled into it via the air intake and fuel injectors, can then ignite, generating the above-mentioned power. The engine's pistons then start pumping, and its crankshaft starts moving. At that point, many other moving parts can get going.
What are the Signs They're Failing?
- You may notice that the plug's leads are starting to corrode.
- You may see that the leads have widened excessively.
- The plugs may not be conducting electricity as well.
- The vehicle's engine may start misfiring, or it may fail completely.
When a spark plug breaks, though, things can get a lot worse: it'll usually cause severe damage to the engine's cylinders.
When Should You Replace Them?
About every 100,000 miles, but often, for best results, you should do so just before reaching those limits. Which spark plugs your Kia vehicle needs depends on the model, but either way, you should choose genuine OE quality.
Why Buy Genuine OEM Spark Plugs vs. Aftermarket?
When Kia manufactures them, it does so according to its models' specs exactly. That kind of compatibility guarantee, the aftermarket can't always give you.
